  • 1720's Love Cards

    • Originally, these cards were printed from copper plates engraved by John Lenthall in 1720. Reproduced from the original deck and offered only at Samson Historical, the cards have a heavy mythological influence. The satyrs and cherubs herald in captions and sayings warning and advising on the ways of the heart.

The value of the cards is depicted in the upper corner by a normal suit card image, though you'll not find any written numbers there.

These make a fun deck to read through or play with. Take turns drawing cards and reciting the catchy prose. Never fear, the sage advice is safe for listeners of all ages.

The cards are of good quality and definitely worth the price. But there are two tiny issues that lower my rating a bit: 1. The cards come in a very pretty tuck box, but sadly it's just a tad too small to easily take out the cards or put them back in without accidentally damaging the box or a card. 2. Unfortunately, the resolution of the illustrations is lower than the one of the text. Having worked in historical research, I know that it is expensive to get high resolution scans of that many illustrations if they haven't already been made and published by the archives. And for smaller prints, such as playing cards, a higher resolution is necessary to retain all the detail. The resolution is good enough to enjoy the cards and recognize the detail on them, they're not pixelated or overly blurry, but if one cares a lot about the illustrations they must keep in mind that this reproduction did not use a resolution high enough to retain the full print quality that the original playing cards presumably had. All in all, I would not let this dissuade me from purchasing these cards. The price-quality ratio is very good, and these cards will provide fun conversations on any game night.
